I'm writing with information on the Student Leadership Practices Inventory (SPLI) which is the foundation for your Leadership Development Action Plan (LDAP due on Friday). Given we were short on class time this past week (and I don't want to use many minutes of our upcoming class time), I am sending a few friendly reminders or clarifications on the SLPI and associated LDAP assignment.

- You should have completed your leader/self-assessment in the SLPI system by yesterday. There are a handful of you who I don't believe have done this, but I will send you a personal email to make sure you complete and don't fall behind.

- You should have invited 10-12 observers (minimum 8 required for the assignment) to complete the assessment of your frequent/infrequent behaviors. Observers can be former/current colleagues, supervisors, or even friends, as long as they have seen you serve in a leadership role.

- Please encourage your observers to complete the short assessment as soon as possible, but no later than Sunday, January 31st.

- I will send you a copy of your SLPI report with your leader/self and observer results on either Friday, January 29th (if you've already met your minimum 8 observers) or Monday, February 1st (if you need the weekend to nudge people). This will be sent to your email account.

- Your report will serve as the foundation for the Leadership Development Action Plan (LDAP). I encourage you to watch the video on Blackboard that provides additional detail on the assignment. The overarching purpose of the assignment is to create an actionable document that you can use to improve upon your infrequent leadership behaviors, and therefore increase the likelihood that others perceive you as a leader.

Overview: One of the most important attributes of a successful leader is self-knowledge about their distinctiveness and areas that require improvement so that you, as a leader, may achieve the next level of business leadership in your career plan. Therefore, you will conduct a professional development assessment and generate a plan to achieve the next level of business leadership in your career plan. This may seem like a deceptively simple assignment, however to get the most out of this assignment you will need to give serious thought and reflection, as well as be honest with your professional development needs.

Details: Below are the four parts that should be addressed in 2 single-spaced pages (11 or 12 point font and 1 inch margins).

I. Identify your core values (at least 2), and explain how values are drivers of leader behaviors that impact organizations and their stakeholders.

II. Describe your current leadership style including interpersonal skills that are strengths and weaknesses, as well as frequent/infrequent behaviors in your current role.

a. Tip: Responses that "exceed expectations" use specific, personal/professional examples, and draw upon material fromWhat Leaders Really Do, Leadership that Gets Results, andThe Leadership Challenge to support statements.

b. Note: Use your Leader/Self and Observer data from the Student LPI 360 to support your statements on frequent/infrequent behaviors.

III. Describe the frequent/infrequent behaviors required for adesired future (i.e., one level above) role. Please clearly identify this role with a title and brief description.

a. Tip: Responses that "exceed expectations" draw upon material from The Leadership Challenge to support statements.

IV. Develop two action steps to achieve this next level of business leadership (i.e., the previously discussed role) in your career plan. In other words, identify two skills or behaviors that you would like to improve upon, and describe how (e.g., what will you do, where will you practice, how will you evaluate your progress) you intend to improve in each area.

a. Tip: Responses that "exceed expectations" use specific, personal/professional examples, and draw upon material from What Leaders Really Do, Leadership that Gets Results, and The Leadership Challenge to support statements.

Final Note: I will forgive one, or possibly two, grammatical/spelling errors in your document, but if you have multiple errors throughout the document you may NOT earn "exceeds expectations."
