One alternative to mechanics-based (or mechanistic) modelling is empirical modelling, that relies on forecast how a material (system) will reply to applied forces. Field of mechanics is broad, comprising the behaviour of all kinds of materials, from solids, particulate material, to fluids. Mechanics of material modelled as continuum is called Continuum Mechanics. Where can you apply continuum mechanics?
