Your consulting firm received a request from a large cable services provider to help with a strategic planning meeting next month. When you meet with Bob, the new Senior VP for the company, he explains that the parent organization recently reorganized from a statewide structure to one in which a Senior VP is responsible for several states that used to operate independently. Bob and his staff explain that they expect about 85 junior VPs, directors, and senior managers to attend the event which will be held at a local hotel.

Bob explains that he wants you to spend the morning leading a fun, engaging team building event that also solicits ideas and suggestions from participants about what the new region can do to improve sales, customer service and employee morale. You then ask what the agenda will be for the second half of the day so that you can ensure a smooth transition. Bob replies, "Well, I have already decided what our region needs to do, so after lunch I'm going to give the participants their new marching orders."

When you remind Bob that you will have spent the entire morning getting participants to share their thoughts and suggestions for enhancing sales, customer service and moral within the region he says, "Oh, come on! Your job is to make them feel good and involved. My job is to tell them what we are really going to what I expect from everyone."
