Assignment:

You are in your sixth straight day working at the Medic Now! Urgent Care Clinic, and cannot wait for your shift to be over. The chart you grab on the door tells you that your next patient is Joe, a 22-year old male complaining of an STD. Once in the exam room, you hope that he will put down his phone and tell you what is bothering him today. He raises his eyebrows as he glances at you for a moment and tells you that "my girlfriend was diagnosed with some type of vaginal infection." You ask him about any other symptoms, which he denies except for a single episode of pain after he urinated 3 months ago. When you ask him about his sexual history, he says that he never has had a history of STDs or any rashes. He states that he has been with 4 women sexually since his last STD check and he says he "usually uses protection". He denies having any abdominal pain, skin changes, or urethral discharge. When you perform a physical exam, you do not notice any pus or clear discharge from the penis. There is no rash present and the testicles appear normal with no tenderness and the urine analysis results are normal.

  1. Given the symptoms (even though there is no discharge from the penis) what are 2 of the most common STDs he should be tested for? Why?
  2. Name and describe the pathogens cause the diseases.
  3. Name two common treatments for these diseases and describe the mechanisms of action.
  4. Patient then produces his alleged girlfriend's medical documents which include a diagnosis of "vulvovaginitis" with the saline wet mount lab results showing flagellated protozoa. What is the likely diagnosis of the man? Explain your diagnosis.
  5. Name and describe the pathogen that causes the disease.
  6. Name a common treatment for the disease and describe the mechanisms of action.
