Case Scenario
Joe is a 13-year-old boy living in Tom Price, Western Australia, with his parents and two younger siblings- Harry (6 years old) and Alison (3 years old). He was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF) at a young age and has been receiving treatment at Perth Children's Hospital for exacerbations of CF symptoms. In addition to CF, Joe also experiences procedural anxiety and pancreatic insufficiency as a complication of his condition. Joe has been scheduled for a tune-up at the hospital and is expected to stay for at least a week. Despite being comfortable with receiving treatment at home, Joe had to be taken to the hospital due to a blocked Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) and worsening CF symptoms.
His parents had to put in a lot of effort to get him to the hospital as he was very reluctant. Since his admission, Joe has been moody and withdrawn, prompting his parents to speak on his behalf. When checking his observations, it was noted that Joe was alert with the following readings: Temperature 39.7°C, HR= 123 beats per minute, Oxygen saturation 95% at Room Air, RR= 25 breaths per minute with mild distress, BP= 104/70mmHg. Joe mentioned that his cough had improved since he began taking antibiotics 24 hours ago. He appeared fatigued and uninterested in eating. Throughout his treatment, Joe's parents have been very supportive.
All non-listed observations are normal.
Content
Based on the case study above:
- Describe in detail the pathophysiology of CF and link this to the presenting symptoms in the scenario.
- Using appropriate paediatric nursing assessment tools, explain the nursing assessments required to undertake to identify potential and actual nursing problems in the scenario.
- Describe the nursing management of Joe's condition.
- Explain the discharge education and health promotion you will emphasise.
- Incorporate the child and family-centred approach in your care.
Extra information
- This assessment task aims to assess your understanding of CF, your ability to apply a child and family-centred approach to nursing care, and your ability to describe the relevant medical information, nursing assessments and management strategies. This involves conducting thorough research to gather relevant information to demonstrate your in-depth knowledge and understanding of the topic and unit content as it applies to the clinical situation detailed in the case study below.
- It is essential to identify suitable assessment and management tools applicable to this scenario.
- Include and apply tools ABCDE, PAT, PARROT, FLACC. Show how to use these tools positively to compliment the scenario, demonstrate critical thinking, consider holistic health and provide rationales for actions undertaken.
- Demonstrate and support discussion with evidence from appropriate literature, including the quality, recency and relevance of that literature. Please do not use Artificial intelligence for this assignment.
- 10 references , however, you should read widely and incorporate that reading into your presentation.
- References should bebe within 5 years of publication only (or 10 years if you are using textbooks). References should be from a valid source (peer-reviewed journals, government organisations, and professional online websites and resources e.g., Department of Health, Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia etc.). References should support paediatric nursing.
General tips on content
- Do not waste valuable time repeating the content of the clinical situation.
- Please do not waste time describing the tools/frameworks, rather apply them.
- Consider that your audience (Registered Nurses in the paediatric emergency department) know nothing about your task nor assume that they know what you mean consider refining and explaining in a way they can understand you.
Presentation
Develop a professional, recorded PowerPoint presentation to address the given questions. It should target registered nurses working in a paediatric emergency department.
Your PPP must include a video file embedded in each slide, with you (your video) presenting the slide.
