Question
1. Describe the electrical double layer theory. Draw a very simple diagram that show the electrical double layer. What is the zeta potential? Indicate its positive in the diagram. Is it a measured or calculated value?
2. Draw (in a LARGE diagram) the van der Waals force, and the electrical double layer force as a function of the surface separation between two particles in an aqueous solution of NaCl at a concentration of 5 mM. Explain the drawing.
3. Draw the DLVO force in the same diagram as in 3) - consider that under these conditions there is no secondary minimum. Explain the drawing.
4. You immerse the same particles in a 100 mM MgCl2 solution instead of NaCl. The two particles aggregate in this solution. Explain why and draw the resulting DLVO force in the same diagram as 4 and 5.
5. Let DL1 be the Debye length for a particular set of water chemistry conditions with a 1:1 electrolyte. Assume only the valence of the electrolyte was changed to 3:3, holding everything else constant. What is the ratio between the Debye length DL2 and DL1? List any assumptions that you make to calculate this ratio.
6. Describe the destabilization mechanism we rely on for water treatment. Which is the most common inorganic chemical used for destabilization? Explain the mechanisms in detail. Why could particle attachment using the secondary minimum be a bad idea?
