Hypothesis and Variables

If pregnancy-induced hypertension is diagnosed early and the patient receives early treatment, there is a reduction in maternal mortality and morbidity. Many variables influence PIH and the development of preeclampsia. Age and race are two significant variables. African American women have a sixty percent higher risk of PIH and preeclampsia than Caucasian women, and the provider must recognize this (Norton Healthcare, 2018). The risk is often related to implicit bias, racial disparities, lack of access, and insufficient medical care in lower socioeconomic families (Why are black women at such high risk of dying from pregnancy complications? 2019). African American women often enter pregnancy with health risks such as heart disease, diabetes, poor nutrition, and obesity (Why are black women at such high risk of dying from pregnancy complications? 2019). Women younger than twenty years of age and older than forty have an increased risk of PIH. Other variables include primigravida, first pregnancy, family history of PIH, multiple gestations, and women with chronic hypertension. A connection in the length of the relationship between a sexual partner and woman has in preeclampsia development (Hviid, 2006). Education for nursing staff and medical providers is also critical to recognizing and treating PIH and preeclampsia.
