Questions
The atmosphere of Tralfamadore is crowded with a number of different animate and inanimate objects, which makes flying a Tralfamadorean aircraft very difficult. Pilots have to listen carefully to the sounds various airborne creatures make to determine whether it is safe to steer towards them or if they must steer away because a creature will attack the aircraft. Pilots listen not just to tell the difference between safe and unsafe creatures, but also to determine where the creatures are relative to the aircraft.
A senior pilot always flies with a more junior pilot who hasn't yet learned to categorize the safe and unsafe sounds. During flight, the junior pilot trains by listening to each sound the pilot hears and comparing it to a pre-recorded unsafe sound. The junior pilot checks to see if their judgment is right or wrong by guessing at each new sound, and then seeing what the senior pilot does.
During a particular training flight where the two pilots are sitting side-by-side, the central panel between them blows up, damaging the tertiary auditory cortex of both pilots - the pilot on the right gets damage to the left hemisphere, while the pilot on the left gets damage to the right hemisphere.
1. Describe how likely it is that either pilot can safely fly the airplane if the senior pilot was on the left and the junior pilot was on the right.
2. Describe how likely it is that either pilot can safely fly the airplane if the junior pilot was on the left and the senior pilot was on the right.
3. How well do you think either pilot could localize the sounds after their injury in each case?
