Case Study 1 - Fred

Fred is 86 years old and is currently a client of a colleague of yours. You have overheard Fred complaining of knee pain for quite some time. His care plan indicates that one of his goals is to find out the source of the knee pain, as well as seeking advice in relation to the treatment of this pain. Fred has come to you to get some advice regarding this situation.

1. What steps would you take to help Fred in this situation?

You have let Fred know that you can speak with his Care Worker. Fred states that he has been asking him for a while, but continuously gets brushed off. You choose to speak with your supervisor instead who, with the consent of Fred allocates you as his main carer.

2. Now that Fred is your client, explain what would you do to assist him?

Fred has been to the GP and has been told he should get some physiotherapy for his knee.

3. Explain what your role is in assisting Fred with his appointments.

The physiotherapist has given Fred some exercises to do, along with physiotherapy sessions. Some time has passed and Fred's knee is not getting any better. Fred is concerned that he isn't doing the exercises right and has come to you with his concerns.

4. What can you do to assist Fred with his concerns?

Case Study 3 - Maria & Alice

Alice's daughter Maria was living in Victoria with her husband and suggested that Alice move interstate from Perth and move in with them. Alice sold her home in Perth as well as many of her belongings and used what money she had left over from the sale of her home to build an extension on Maria's property where she could live. Alice did not receive independent legal advice about this arrangement. Alice's name was not put onto the title of the property and there was no agreement in place about the details of what Alice would receive in exchange for the improvement she had made to the property.

Maria and her family were very busy and Alice was often left at home alone. Alice found it challenging being in a new state without her old neighbours, and having no drivers licence made getting around difficult. She found herself to be very lonely and her relationship with Maria and her family deteriorated over time.

Five years after Alice moved in with her daughter, Maria and her husband lost a large amount of money in an investment that they had been relying on and they were struggling to meet their mortgage repayments. Six months later Maria told Alice that they had to sell the property and downsize and there would be no room in the new house for Alice. They refused to repay more than Alice's initial investment in the property even though Alice had spent that amount more than 5 years before and the property had appreciated greatly in value over that time.

1. Explain the signs that indicate that Alice is experiencing elder abuse, the type ofabuse and the impact this is having on Alice.

2. Describe how you would initially respond to Alice's concerns and what sort of questions could you ask to gather more information about the incident.

3. List the external services could you link Alice to, and how would you go about doing this.

4. Describe how an organisation can prevent elder abuse.
