Helbig, (2023), states that quantitative research depends on measurements and numerical values. Qualitative research focuses on characteristics that can't be measured with numbers. This type of data is collected through interviews and observations. There are three types of qualitative research. Phenomenology, grounded theory, and ethnography. Phenomology collects data through observation and experience. Grounded theory is research that takes first person observations or interviews and develops a theory or concept about the population being observed. Ethnography is a type of qualitative research that focuses on cultures, everyday life, and cultural changes through observation or interview. One way my hospital uses qualitative and quantitative research is in our pediatric sepsis swarm that has recently been incorporated in our peds units. Quantitative research was used to identify that sepsis is a leading cause of death in children. Qualitative research was conducted to determine that many children's hospitals have a pediatric sepsis process to rule out sepsis and it is beneficial in many cases. The result of this research has made it so that when charting a nurse can document that a sepsis swarm is needed and the doctors will be alerted to conduct a swarm on the suspected septic patient (UNMH Pediatric Sepsis.
