Assignment:
For your initial post, share one misconception you held about family work before reading the assigned chapters, what you now see as the reality, and how you would need to respond to that reality to be an ethical professional.
For your response post, ask a follow-up open question to deepen your understanding of a fellow student's post (preferably one that has not already received a question). Also, answer any questions that are asked by your classmates.
PLEASE MAKE ANY CHANGES:
I thought that family work mostly consisted of giving families guidance and solutions before I started reading the assigned chapters. But as time passes, I see that collaborative efforts, attentive listening, and giving families the freedom to solve their problems are more important for successful family work. As an ethical professional, I must approach families with cultural humility, appreciating their distinct experiences and assets. To give care that is culturally competent, I should also be conscious of my prejudices and keep learning new things.
I would pose the following question to a classmate who hasn't gotten a question yet in my response post: "How do you reach a balance between upholding professional boundaries and demonstrating empathy in your interactions with families?"
