Case Study:
Jani is 17 years old and comes from an Islamic background. Jani moved to Australia with her family when she was 12.
Jani and her family are devout followers of Islam. As part of practicing her faith, Jani will pray 5 times a day, wears a head covering, refuse to eat pork or drink alcohol, and will not be alone in the presence of a man.
Jani discloses that she has begun to hear voices in her mind. She says they seem to get 'louder when she is at school, and particularly after stressful situations. Jani is starting to feel scared about going to school and is afraid of what she might do if the voices continue.
Jani does not want her family to know about the voices as she thinks they won't understand what she is going through. There was little information or support given to people with mental illness where her parents grew up and worries they will dismiss her or send her to live with other family members if they find out.
