Case study: One thing Ian felt quite confident in when he graduated was stoma care. He had undertaken quite a few placements where patients had stomas. Still, when he got a job in a surgical ward, he was surprised to find a nurse employed in the very grand-sounding position of stomal therapy consultant. One day, as he was educating a patient about his stoma care, the charge nurse apologised for interrupting but asked him to come to her office straightaway. When he arrived, he found the stomal therapist there also. Ian sat there in disbelief as the two senior nurses told him that he was not to perform stoma care or education with his patients, as it was not his role. When he protested that he felt it was within his abilities, they became pretty frustrated with him. Didn't he appreciate how lucky he was to work in a place with such a resource?' He felt so angry and wanted to resign.
