Assignment:
Can you right a small response using your own words for each of the following 2 paragraph's separately? (50 to 90 words)
1) Anselm defines theology as; finding your own understanding of faith. Understanding comes before your faith. To even have faith you must find your understanding.
Aquinas defines theology as; a science. By this he means theology is studying the science of God. God made everything and he is the center. Aquinas believes that faith is first then understanding. But to have faith we still must have an understanding.
Tillich defines theology as; human nature. Tillich believes that we can look at what God's perspective and belief is, but we have to also look at it through the human POV.
We have to have apologetics, which is looking at our faith with human eyes and what can be understood as people.
I think Tillich has the best definition. We can have faith and believe in whatever we believe in, but we still have to keep in mind that we are human. We have to look at what is best for us in our day and age. This makes the most sense to me.
2) Theology is broken down into two definitions, "theos" (God) and "logos" (reason or word). The entire definition then means speech about God. In our lecture PowerPoint, theology on a larger scale, is the study or science which treats God, his nature and attributes, and his relations with man and the universe. In the lecture, it talks about Biblical, Natural, and Dogmatic Theology. In our book, FOTS, it mentions that theology starts from faith. There is a debate in the book about if theology is a science or not. Some claim in the article that theology cannot be a science because not all have faith. Science does not deal with individual cases, but theology does. Others think it is a science because science begins from a superior body of knowledge.
