Question

Sodium restriction is a well established phenomenon in the management of hypertension. However, not everyone in the population benefits equally from restricting sodium intake in controlling their blood pressure as is explained by the concept of salt sensitivity. This week I would like for us to look more into this concept, the mechanisms behind it and its application in clinical practice.

Review literature in this area that includes (but not limited) to the points below. Your post should have flow, do not respond as though you are answering the questions independently.

1) What are the current sodium intake recommendations (RDA) and what is the average sodium intake in the US (in g/day)

2) Define salt sensitive hypertension and describe the physiological mechanisms behind this phenomenon.

3) Who is most likely to be sensitive to salt intake in the population (race, age, other demographic characteristics?)

4) Knowing that there are individuals who are salt sensitive and others who are salt resistant, would that change your general sodium intake message in a group setting (like in a community education session)? Why or why not.
