Assignment Description

Select ONE of the following prompts that tie to content covered in Modules 4-5. Read through the instructions for each option and decide which one is of most interest to you. There are 2 options listed, but you only need to address ONE of them!

Social Cognition OR Communication

Option 1 - Social Cognition

Students who select this option will take a deeper look at the concept of impression management in general, as well as apply it to their own experiences. Be sure to provide clear, complete definitions and cite the course textbook.

First, complete the Self-Monitoring Scale on Table 4.2. You will not need to share your scores or answers! Next, compose a paper addressing the following items:

  • Define impression management and explain why it is an important concept in relationships.
  • Explain the different strategies individuals use that demonstrate this concept (remember to define each term you introduce and cite the textbook). As you identify these strategies, provide some possible examples of advantages and disadvantages of misrepresenting oneself.
  • Describe how YOU use impression management to represent yourself to your friends, family, and/or partners - be sure to identify specific strategies addressed in item 2 above.
  • Think back to your responses on the Self-Monitoring Scale and share a little about that process. Did your score surprise you? Do you think it describes you accurately? Did you use impression management while filling out the scale? If so, what might that say about your self-monitoring tendencies?
  • Finally, provide a brief statement about a topic in Modules 5 or 6 stood out most to you and why (it could be from Chapter 4, 5, or 6).

Option 2 - Communication

Review the two videos in the module - one featuring Jay Cadet and the other the interview with John Gottman (whose research was also addressed in Module 2 when we talked about Research Methods). Be sure to provide clear, complete definitions and cite the course textbook. (1-22-25 note - It appears the Jay Cadet video might no longer be available - currently marked as a private channel - that's unfortunate as it had a great message! Please just focus on the Gottman video for this option)

  1. Identify THREE concepts addressed in the videos that tie in with information presented in Chapter 5. As you identify those concepts, be sure to also define/explain each of the concepts using information from the textbook and remember to use in-text citations.
  2. Give a "real life" example to illustrate ONE of the three concepts, whether in your own relationships or perhaps your parents, siblings, or friends. Be sure to provide a clear explanation of how the concept relates.
  3. Identify the most important thing you learned in this chapter and explain why it stood out to you.
  4. Finally, provide a brief statement about a topic in Modules 5 or 6 stood out most to you and why (it could be from Chapter 4, 5, or 6).
