Defamation is primarily classified as libel or slander and under slander there is slander per se.

Libel is essentially a written publication in which a false statement is made.

Slander is speaking a false statement aloud which is more difficult to prove.

Slander per se is speaking a false statement but with the context to cause damage even if the statement was only spoken such as stating someone has a transmittable disease that they do not.

There are a few privileges that exist so that people can speak about something without facing a defamation charge. The public figure privilege is one of those in which we can "encourage" free discussion about them. In this we do not hold people liable for defamation charges to come about. I think this is good and bad, but I would have to side with more of the bad side. We see the tabloids who write things all of the time that are not true about celebrities for fun and games, but this is still someones life and some of those things, if not all of them, are hurtful and hint to something that is not true. Celebrities and public figures are people too. They have lives, families and children who can be effected by the everyday things that people are allowed to write about them.
