Septic Shock Case Study Ms. D., a 54-year-old patient, is brought to the emergency department (ED) by her daughter because of weakness and a decreasing level of consciousness. The patient responds to brief commands to open her eyes and move her arms and legs, but she is unable to answer any questions. The daughter tells the nurse that she complained of abdominal and back pain earlier in the day. She was nauseated and vomited a small amount of yellow green emesis twice. Although she is usually very alert and oriented, she was lethargic this morning and became increasingly sleepy. Skin is pale and cool to touch. Heart sounds are irregular, pulses 2 , no edema. She has not had anything to eat or drink today. Bowel sounds are present.
