Explanation of drug-drug interactions and their potential consequences: Drug interactions can raise the possibility of side effects or decrease the efficacy of one or multiple medications. Different drugs taken simultaneously can interact with each other by alter the ways each drug is metabolized, absorbed, distributed and excreted. In some instances, those drug interactions can contribute to the therapeutic effects of each drug decreasing or even increasing and may sometimes reach a toxic level leading to fatal adverse effects or unexpected ones. 2.Compare and contrast different studies on the severity and frequency of drug interactions in polypharmacy. As per one study that was conducted in patients older than 65 years old potential drug interactions caused by polypharmacy were identified between clopidogrel and esomeprazole as it altered cardiovascular functions. In the same study several potential drug interactions were also identified between aspirin and enoxaparin, increasing the risk for bleeding (Alhumaidi et al.,2023) According to a cohort study conducted by 3 different hospitals in Pennsylvania, a high bleeding risk were identified in patients taking warfarin and amiodarone simultaneously who have altered kidney function (Miano et al.,2020).
