The 2013 film Blackfish attempts to expose the daker side of keeping Orca-aka killer whales-in captivity. It chronicled the 2010 death of a Seaworld trainer, along with multiple other incidents in which 5-ton orca whales appeared to intentionally attack their trainers. The movie had many people questioning the ethical nature of keeping animals in captivity. If we keep animals in captivity, are we depriving them of their freedom? Some point out that freedom is never absolute. Even in the wild, an animal is restricted by its abiotic and biotic environments. Many modern zoos and aquariums keep animals in habitats that match their natural ones- but is that possible for an orca? Most zoos and aquariums today do not capture animals from the wild and are focused on conservation Is having a few animals in a zoo/aquarium so people can see them and gain a respect or love of the animals, worth having the animals in captivity (sacrificing a few for the sake of the group)?
