1. Soil pH determine what types of plants will grow the best. If soil is too acidic, lime can be added to the soil, and if it is too basic, peat moss can be added to the soil. You test your soil and find that its pH is 2.8, and you want to grow oaks, which prefer to grow in soils in the 6.0-7.5pH range. Would you add lime or peat moss to adjust your soil's pH? Why?

2. You scoop up a water sample from a local pond nearby, because you are curious about the possible microbes that might live there. After looking at several slides that held drops of the sample, you noticed two different kinds of cells: One kind was very small and had no separate internal structures; the other kind was much larger, and it contained several kinds of internal structures that were physically different from each other. Please name each cell and briefly describe their overall similarities and differences.

3. Your local weather station alerts you to the fact that 'acid rain' is currently falling in your area. You are worried about the well-being of your garden in your backyard, and decide to temporarily cover up as many plants as you can with plastic sheets. Then you explain to your neighbors what 'acid rain' is, and how it negatively affects plants.
