Cultural competence is when health organizations provide services that meet the cultural, social, and religious needs of patients and their families (Swihart et al., 2023). One of my personal beliefs is Christianity. I encounter different beliefs in the area I work in when caring for palliative patients. A personal decision that I had to make regarding this in the workplace was respecting the right of others to have their own beliefs. In this situation, a patient's wife requested a catholic priest to hold communion. Even though this was conflicting with my personal beliefs, I took ownership of the fact that I had a personal duty to my patients to uphold that right for them.
