Scenario - Huntsman Hotels plc

Huntsman Hotels, PLC, owns more than 60 hotels throughout the United Kingdom. Huntsman's hotels are considered budget accommodations; they are functional, clean and reasonably priced.

Task

Prepare a report which critically evaluates the HR issues in the company, making recommendations for change. Justify any suggestions that you make, supporting your ideas with relevant theory and examples of best practice from the hotel industry and other comparable sectors.

Report Requirements

In preparing your report you should address the following:

1. Identify the main HR issues in the case study using relevant theory.

2. Recommend changes in light of your analysis to the practices of Rewarding people at work. Evaluate the risks and benefit of what you propose.

3. Critically analyse the wider implications relating to the management of people at Huntsman in light of the changes you have suggested.

You should attempt all questions in your 2500 word answer.

Draw on complimentary or contrasting examples when responding and make sure that you justify your answers using relevant literature and theories. Take into account the different aims, demands and values of the parties in the case study. Advice will be provided by your tutor regarding suitable format and layout.

- Knowledge and understanding of the key theories of Human Resource Management and Strategy.
- Writing a structured, logical report.
- Ability to identify, analyse and evaluate the issues concerning all sections of the workforce in the scenario.
- Applying appropriate theory to this scenario to demonstrate practical solutions to the problems.

• A basic answer (40 - 49%) will identify some of the main issues and demonstrate knowledge of human resource management theory but at a superficial level. It may demonstrate difficulties with structure and contain some minor gaps in understanding and expression may lack maturity. Answers in this category will often adopt a write-all-you-know-about-the-topic approach and may include little or no application. A satisfactory answer (50-59%) will identify majority of issues and demonstrate knowledge of the relevant human resource management theory but with some omissions in content as well as some inconsistencies in application and inaccuracies in expression. Structure will be largely logical. A good answer (60-69%) will adopt a logical structure and identify almost all of the issues and the appropriate theory relating to them. Knowledge will be sound. Arguments will be supported by references to most of the relevant management theory. Omissions and inaccuracies will be minor.
