Activity/Strategy 1: Teaching Personal Safety Skills (Individual Level)
One that can be used to prevent violence against children who has disabilities would be teaching them personal safety skills. They are more vulnerable to abuse and neglect and may have difficulty communicating with others. This teaching can and will help them understand what abuse is, how they can recognize and how they can also report it if it were to happen to them. The risk factors that are addressed include lack of knowledge and not having the ability to communicate. The protective factors mentioned here include knowledge of personal boundaries as mentioned in the example of prevention, children need to learn the skills of personal skills as this will help them focus on personal boundaries.
Activity/Strategy 2: Providing Supportive Services to Families (Relationship Level)
Other ways that can help prevent violence against children with disabilities is to provide resources and services to families. There are many times families with children with disabilities may go through high levels of stress due to not having enough resources to prevent violence against their children. Providing resources that are right for them and their children such as counselling, parent education etc. may relieve stress and may increase knowledge so prevention of violence can happen. The risk factors addressed is family stress, lack of not having enough support as well as social problems. The protective factors that are addressed here include social support, parental toughness, and access to resources. When parents are offered or given to resources regarding their children who may have disability, it takes away stress and they may feel comfortable to come back for more resources if something were to happen. Parents won't feel alone as they feel the help and resources given.
Activity/Strategy 3: Creating Safe and Inclusive Communities (Community Level)
The third activity that may help children with disabilities prevent violence would be creating a safe community. Making sure they are not in a bullying environment and are not being discriminated against. When creating safe communities and safe inclusive, it will promote positive statements toward disability, it will reduce the stigma around disability and prevent violence. The risk factors addressed here include social exclusion, discrimination, and bullying. The protective factors that support would be social support, great and positive feelings, or attitudes towards individual or a child with disability. Children with disability needs to feel a sense of belonging or having positive feelings about themselves and to have these feelings, it needs to be created with in the environment they are in themselves and to have these feelings, it needs to be created with in the environment they are in.
