Creating an evidence-based nursing practice is critical to rendering quality care. The same holds for an evidence-based understanding of the Bible: it is either a nice book of morals and legend created by well-intentioned writers or it is actually the inspired word of God and much more than simply another religious book. Our goal in nursing and in life is to distinguish what is real versus what is simply opinion.

Read John's description of the ending minutes of the crucifixion (John 19:31-35) and note the soldier piercing Jesus' side (crucifixion victims were elevated several feet above ground level on the vertical portion of the "t" shaped cross ) so the spear would stab in an upward direction; this, incidentally, fits the protective morphology of the anterior rib cage/thoracic wall perfectly. It is difficult to stab through the anterior rib cage in an inferiorly oriented direction because the knife/spear tends to deflect off the ribs.

Note verse 34 especially. After being stabbed, "immediately there came out blood and water". Think of a hematocrit test: whole blood is allowed to settle in a capillary tube leaving 1) serum on top of the tube, 2) a thin "buffy layer" of WBC and 3) heavier RBC's at the bottom. What came out of Jesus' side? How does it relate to pathophysiology? How does this impact your thinking about the scientific validity of the Bible?
