Forestry and natural resources
Being a Leader in Your Own Community
Imagine that you have been charged with creating a program to help the environment in your community. Ideally, your project will relate directly to forestry. If you live in an urban environment, think about what could be done to benefit your ecosystem or natural environment in urban settings, such as parks or lakes. Many stories are available online about young people who have made a difference in their communities, so you can look at those for inspiration.
Also look at what is already being done in your community by searching online for local or national organizations that share your concern. Examining what others with the same goal are doing, or have done, is an excellent way to build a better plan.
Once you have an idea for a community project, create a three-page proposal. Your proposal should illustrate what it would take to get your project off the ground. Leadership means doing a lot of the work yourself, especially in the beginning.
To effectively communicate your idea, your proposal would include:
A description of the community project, including identifying a problem and explaining your solution
1. How this project relates to forestry or creating a cleaner environment
2. Any resources you would need to complete it (supplies, transportation, volunteers)
3. Who you would like to support your project (city government, local community group)
4. Some research on organizations in your area and what they have done to address similar issue.
