Question
Provide an insight you gained this analysis of how the cost impacted the organization and the stakeholders. In my role as a ticket agent at New Jersey Transit, an example of a sunk cost would be the investment made in upgrading ticketing systems that were later found to be incompatible with other software used by the organization. Once the new system was implemented and the money was spent, it became a sunk cost because the funds could not be recovered, and the system could not be undone or returned. Despite the substantial financial outlay, the system was ultimately not effective, and the organization had to invest in a different solution. Alternatively, an example of opportunity cost would be the decision to allocate resources to the upgrade of the ticketing system instead of investing in more customer service training or improving the scheduling system. The opportunity cost in this case would be the potential benefits the organization could have gained from those alternative investments, such as improved customer satisfaction or better operational efficiency. The sunk cost of the ticketing system upgrade impacted New Jersey Transit by leading to a wasted financial investment. Stakeholders, including the management team and customers, were affected.
