Background
This scenario takes place in a well-known retail store. Currently, job application forms are screened by the appropriate department managers to short list who should be interviewed. References are also collected. The department managers (DM) conduct their own interviewing using individual, unstructured interviews and base their selection decisions almost exclusively on these interviews. They tend to have a lot of confidence in their gut feelings about candidates and believe they have been doing a good job of selecting the right applicant. Human Resources Professional (HRP) Perspective: You are meeting with a Department Manager to convince them they should adopt a more structured, objective decision-making system. You anticipate the DM will raise some objections to your suggestions. You must carefully listen and address these objections. Your goal is to help the DM understand the importance of objectivity and the wide variety of decision-making models available to them. Help them understand the potential legal concerns around "gut feelings". Department Manager (DM) Perspective: You are meeting with the Human Resources Professional as you hear HR is trying to implement the use of statistics into the hiring process. Math is not your strong point, but people are, and you know how to pick them. You don't have the time to learn any new procedures and see nothing wrong with the current ones. You are reluctantly meeting with the HRP to discuss your decision making practices. Scenario: The human resources professional (HRP) is trying to improve the selection procedures for the organization and implement a more structured, objective decision-making system.
Discussion Question
Consider the perspective of both the HRP and DM and provide options of more structured, objective decision-making methods that the DM can undertake. Consider the decision-making systems described in the textbook specifically those that require less mathematics. Include any advice around the legal pitfalls of subjective decision making.
