Sea level rise is occurring as a consequence of human-induced climate change. Some estimates state that sea level rise has increased by just under 4 inches since 1993 (the start of the satellite record on sea level rise). Scientists estimate that between 1992 and 2100, sea levels could experience a total increase of between 8 inches (with low levels of CO2 emissions) and 6.6 feet (under a high emissions scenario). Sea level rise can have several negative consequences for coastal communities, including flooding, coastal erosion, shifts in coastal habitat types, and changing in water quality including less freshwater supply. In the U.S., approximately 40% of the population lives in a high population-density coastline area that could experience adverse effects of sea level rise. It is no surprise, therefore, that many coastal communities in the U.S. are trying to develop strategies to adapt to the adverse effects of sea level rise.
