The St. Rita's Healthcare System Case Study
It was 7 pm and Joan Morton was just wrapping up her day. "Could I have use the help of an EIM organization today," she thought. At an early morning meeting, the Clinical Informatics Committee grappled with how to capture data in clinical notes in a more meaning full way. The unstructured data in clinical notes was a rich repository of information but practically useless for easy retrieval and reporting requirements. With several national initiatives looming, how could any organization capture all the unstructured data in an electronic health record to populate structures data in templates, making it easy for reporting purposes? "Today we really would have called on the expertise of data stewards in content and document management to guide our planning on this," Joan reflected.
As she cleared her desk, Joan's thought moved to the summary presentation made by the EIM team that morning. The information they complied was exactly what she needed to develop an EIM concept document to get buy-in from the organization's executive team and start the ball rolling to build an EIM department.
Joan asked the team to spend the following weeks fleshing out each EIM domain in more detail. Wanting to get started, the team scheduled their next meeting for mid-week.
Answer the following questions:
1. To help the team expand its information on EIM, conduct an Internet search and retrieve five articles on EIM. Construct a table that list the EIM domains described in each article. What are some similarities among the articles? What are the differences? What conclusions can you draw about EIM from these articles?
2. If you were at the team meeting , would you agree with Bob's assertion that EIM structure and implementation are dependent on the organization's vision, mission, strategy and goals for the program? How would you argue your case?
3. Do you agree with the assertion made in the chapter that HIM practice has fundamentally changed? explain your position
4. If you were in the discussion with the team about the importance of the EIM domains, which EIM domain would you suggest is the most critical to the success of an EIM program? How would you back up your rationale for your choice?
