Variation in wet sampler readings. Wet samplers are standard devices used to measure the chemical composition of precipitation. The accuracy of the wet deposition readings, however, may depend on the number of samplers stationed in the field. Experimenters in The Netherlands collected wet deposition measurements using anywhere from one to eight identical wet samplers (Atmospheric Environment, Vol. 24A, 1990). For each sampler (or sampler combination), data were collected every 24 hours for an entire year; thus, 365 readings were collected per sampler (or sampler combination).
When one wet sampler was used, the standard deviation of the hydrogen readings (measured as percentage relative to the average reading from all eight samplers) was 6.3%. When three wet samplers were used, the standard deviation of the hydrogen readings (measured as percentage relative to the average reading from all eight samplers) was 2.6%.
Conduct a test to compare the variation in hydrogen readings for the two sampling schemes (i.e., one wet sampler vs. three wet samplers). Test using α = .05.
