Question

The diagnosis of pulmonary embolism, while simplified by computed tomographic pulmonary angiography (CTPA), is still problematic in the emergency setting or with unstable patients. Researchers evaluated the potential for an ultrasound of the lungs to be an appropriate diagnostic tool in such settings. They assessed 200 patients who presented to the emergency room with symptoms related to possible pulmonary embolism. These are their findings: Positive by CTPA Negative by CTPA totals Positive lung ultrasound 50 30 80 Negative lung ultrasound 6 114 120 56 144 200 What is the probability that a person with a pulmonary embolism will be incorrectly diagnosed as disease-free by the lung ultrasound?
