Assignment:
Imagine you are a member of a social worker task force that has been asked to evaluate the We Care About You LLC organization and propose improvements to their structure and processes to better help their clients. Read the following scenario to learn more about the organization, including the perspective of a current client.
We Care About You LLC is an organization that aids community residents of a small town by helping them access services such as food stamps, Medicaid, and childcare. Peter is a single father of twin daughters and a client at We Care About You LLC. As part of the case management process, Peter recently participated in an evaluation interview in which he was asked to describe his experience with the organization.
Peter states that he first came to the agency because he needed assistance and resources for finding a job that would accommodate his parental obligations and schedule.
Although Peter was able to meet with his assigned social worker, Sandra, twice, he has since made multiple attempts to schedule another meeting but has been unsuccessful. He tried to use the organization's online appointment system, but when he arrived for his scheduled appointment, he was told the organization had no record of his online request. Frustrated, he reported the issue to a supervisor three weeks ago, but no one has responded or called him to follow up on his issues.
Peter is feeling marginalized as a single father and is concerned that he is not receiving the same level of support that a single mother would in similar circumstances. Furthermore, he senses Sandra may harbor a bias against him for being a single father raising two young girls because of some negative remarks she made in their last meeting. He believes that Sandra has doubts about his ability to care for his daughters adequately.
To add to his stress, a teacher at his children's school recently spoke with him about her concerns that the girls have been left unsupervised for long hours after school waiting for Peter to pick them up after work. With no family or reliable support network, Peter worries the state may intervene and remove his children from his care if he cannot get the assistance he needs.
The agency's protocol requires clients to work through their designated social worker, and there is no client advisory group or formal appeals process for clients, so Peter is considering filing a complaint with the state organization that oversees the agency.
Consider the following guiding questions:
How might the agency's management improve the system to include procedures and opportunities to empower Peter?
How can the organization give Peter better opportunities to voice his opinions or concerns and have direct access to people in power making decisions about him?
