Even though Miranda has been working as a dental assistant for five years, she has not completed her expanded functions training. She is currently in school working towards earning her certificate but has not yet graduated or taken her state examinations. On an extremely busy day in the office, everyone is running behind but doing their best to provide quality care to their patients. Since the dentist knows that Miranda is an amazing assistant who is furthering her education, she asks Miranda if she would feel comfortable removing a temporary restoration from the next patient while she finishes an exam with the hygienist. Miranda knows how to do this and is confident that she can complete the task with no problem; however, this would be illegal since she is not a licensed expanded functions dental assistant. She knows this and understands that if something were to go wrong, it is possible she would never be able to take the exam to become licensed.
