Question

J.S. is a 57-year-old female presenting to the emergency department with complaints of severe abdominal pain. The provider orders pantoprazole 40 mg IV and sends the patient for diagnostic testing. The results of the tests show that J.S. is experiencing a GI bleed and requires a blood transfusion; however, the patient's religious beliefs do not allow blood transfusions and she refuses this treatment. As her hemoglobin drops, the patient's hemodynamic stability declines and she is admitted to the ICU. J.S. is assigned to the care of a newly graduated nurse still on orientation and under the supervision of a precepting nurse. The new graduate and precepting nurse are not in agreement with each other or the patient regarding the patient's decision to refuse a blood transfusion.
