Another organisational consideration in regard to delivering professional and competent service involves appropriate complaints management. Counselling organisations should have policies and procedures in place for receiving and responding to client complaints. Clients have the right to make complaint and counsellors (and they employers) are required to treat these seriously and make appropriate changes where warranted. Following appropriate processes and making improvements in response to such complaints are also critical to promoting professional practice. It is also important to understand that clients are also able to make a complaint to the Australian Counselling Association if they believe that a counsellor has breached any specific clauses of the ACA Code of Ethics and Practice. If a counsellor has been found to be in breach, the ACA can impose different sanctions depending upon the seriousness of the breach. These sanctions range from the introduction of probationary requirements and additional supervision through to the termination of membership with the ACA.2.34 Counselling organisations also have a responsibility for promoting professional and competent service provision.
