Question: The Cold War between the United States and USSR lasted almost 45 years and of course ran through several U.S presidential administrations with each administration creating or modifying the existing Foreign Policy. One of the policies used by the U.S to curb the spread of communists acts by USSR was containment. Hastedt & Lantis (2024) noted that this was the U.S implementation of policies that entailed the use of economic and mostly military measures to exert counter pressure on the USSR in selected countries, military included the U.S supplying vulnerable countries with U.S military defense protection and use of nuclear weapons if necessary.

Détente on the other hand had more to do with the U.S offering an olive branch for civil negotiations with the USSR. President Richard Nixon was a big supporter of the Détente, he believed in employing peaceful negotiations and being civil with the USSR to restrict their communist activities. Not many people in government supported this move by Nixon, it was seen as portraying America as defeated and weak and was not effective in setting the needed boundaries on the USSR as they continued to spread their occupancy in nations including Vietnam and Africa.
