Question

As an inpatient coder, she has been asked by your supervisor to code debridements as excisional. As a coder, she is not comfortable with this practice. She tried to discuss it with him, but he said that she was to follow his instructions and that she could not issue any queries. Knowing this practice was not right she went to the HIM director, who only half-listened to her concerns, saying that the coding supervisor must have a good reason for the instruction. The other coders are following his instructions without questioning them. She knows she could get into trouble for not following the instructions but is also worried that the coding supervisor will retaliate against her if she reports this practice.
