A nurse is caring for a client with complications of hyperthyroidism in the emergency department (ED). Today: 34-year-old client presented to ED with increased shortness of breath, orthopnea, paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea, and increasing lower leg edema, suggestive of thyroid storm. Client rates pain level as a 2 on a scale of 0 to 10. One week history of weight loss, intolerance to heat, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and heart palpitations. Reported onset of symptoms approximately 6 months after delivering a healthy child.
