Question

Classical School gave us the theory of deterrence. According to this theory, a punishment, such as a period of incarceration, should stop people from committing crime as they weigh the costs of going to prison against the benefits of committing the crime. But, on page 403, in Linden, the authors tell us that long prison sentences do not deter people and in fact "may actually increase an individual's likelihood of future criminal behaviour." Why might this be? What else may be influencing a person's decision to commit a crime? What are the ways prison may affect someone's life and increase their chances of offending?
