Joe Kaluwa, 88 is a retired farmer who lives in his home with his wife, lily. Mr Kaluwa started smoking at age 13 and now, after a life time of smoking, has advanced emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Mr kaluwa has been repeatedly instructed to quit smoking but he continues to smoke pack of cigarettes a day. Mrs kaluwa has forbidden smoking inside the house, so he goes outside to smoke in the backyard during summer and in the garage during winter. Mr. kaluwa was hospitalized recently for his COPD and was discharged yesterday. He was sent home with a nasal cannula through which oxygen is administered through to him and he was instructed to use it 24hours a day. Whiles he was in the hospital he was warned to not let any one smoke around his oxygen because of the risk of combustion. A respiratory therapist set up his oxygen tank and tubing at his home. You have been assigned to provide support care and to ensure that he maintains his oxygen therapy. Today upon your arrival on your first visit to Mr. Kkaluwa, you find him sitting in his backyard calmly smoking a cigarette.
