Purpose: Healthcare managers must be able to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Communication involves skills such as clarity, concision, confidence, respect, and empathy. While communicating, healthcare managers must rely on facts to answer questions and evidence to solve problems. All of these skills should be demonstrated in this discussion, both in answering the question and giving feedback to classmates.

Task: Too often, individuals are blamed for their chronic health problems. Yet we know that many of the causes for poor health are outside of an individual's control. We must be aware of the impact of social determinants of health to address the root causes of poor health in this country.

Think about someone you know who has a chronic health problem. Do not use that person's name but refer to them as Individual A.

Discuss the chronic health problem and the determinants which contribute to that health problem for Individual A. Be specific. You must state both the category and the specific determinant. For example, social and economic factors including education and income.

Explain how the determinants contribute to Individual A's chronic health problem.
