According to campus mental health professionals, the $8 million Children's Behavioral Health Services Fund created by the law has provided nearly $1.4 million in services to youth mental health, an "incredible addition" to their mental health services. It is unknown how many students are getting overlooked for treatment because counselors and social workers do not provide adequate mental health services (Montanari and Polletta, 2022). More than half of Arizona schools have not referred students under the law two years after the program began. An unknown number of students overlooked for treatment among traditional districts and charter schools that refer (Montanari and Polletta, 2022). Youth who experienced a major depressive episode in the year before the pandemic was not treated 70% the because of obstacles, according to the article. The second-leading cause of death for Arizonans between the ages of 10 and 19 is suicide (Montanari and Polletta, 2022).
