Alex is an 18 month old referred to your child development program. Alex presents with her mother, Susan. Alex is a alert and cautiously walks over to the shelves with toys. She chooses several and sits down to play with them while you and Susan talk. Susan is concerned that Alex has developmental delays so she took her to her pediatrician, who referred Alex and Susan to your program. Susan, an ICU nurse manager, is a single mother and Alex is her only child. When Susan is at work, Alex is cared for by her maternal grandparents, who dote on her. During your interview with Susan, she provides the following information on milestones achieved by Alex; she rolled over for the first time at 3 months and sat without help for the first time at 8 months. Alex began cruising (walking using furniture for balancing) at 11 months and walked without assistance at 15 months. She began using simple words at 13 months (later testing will reveal Alex has a vocabulary of about 100 words at 18 months). Alex can feed herself, but is quite messy. She developed 'pincer' grip (thumb and forefinger) at 14 months.
