This case study reflects situations that I encountered in my chaplaincy across multiple health systems. Unfortunately, I saw decisions from nursing teams that felt unethical. The situation to which I invite you to respond presupposes that you are a nurse on a Med. Surg. unit. A nurse on the floor went home sick and you have to pick up some of her patients. One of your patients is an elderly woman who is obese, confused, and considered a fall risk. She sleeps most of her existence and is currently suffering from bedsores on top of the condition the doctors are trying to treat. She awakened and requested assistance with bathing. Trying to take advantage of her alertness, you move some orders around and coordinate with another nurse to help you safely move her and stabilize her in various positions as you help her bathe. You have success in bathing your patient, but it takes longer than you hoped. You and the other nurse leave her in good condition when suddenly she soils her bed in the middle of your preparations for your next patient. Your patient load is high and the time you gave to wash her has you backed.
