Scenario:

You are a social worker for a program that provides case management services and mental health services to young adults that are "aging out" of the Department of Child Services system.

Your agency takes referrals from schools, foster care agencies, self-referrals, and the Department of Child Services. The goal of your agency is to provide wrap-around services to improve the living situations and mental health of your clients.

Your role is to meet with the client for an initial interview to conduct a biopsychosocial-spiritual assessment, to develop an initial plan, alongside of the client, that includes 1-2 goals to address any identified mental health needs and to connect your client to available resources in the community or with your agency. Your agency provides ongoing case management services as needed and provides traditional counseling services too. The first interview is conducted via video conferencing.

In this scenario, you are meeting Charlie, a 19-year-old, who was referred to your agency from the Department of Child Services for depression and lack of direction on "what they would like to do for the rest of their life". Charlie currently resides in a group home with other young adults aging out of the system. Charlie is very guarded, does not trust the system, and rather independent.
