There are certain factors to consider when prescribing opioids. The first thing to consider is if the patient has ever taken opioids before. This shall be considered as a risk factor test. Identifying personal family history of substance abuse or opioid misuse is this central to know during assessment. A pain assessment scale is also very necessary when prescribing opioids. Determining the severity, understanding the cause of what's causing the patients pain, and determining if the pain is chronic or acute is essential. Another factor is knowing if there's a history of psychiatric conditions and if the patient is also taking other central nervous system depressants. According to risk stratification opioid prescribing (2019) essential Medical Corps morbidities that can increase the risk factors for opioid induced morbidity or mortality include, "sleep apnea, COPD, fall risks, cognitive status, pregnancy, any age over 65 and above" (p.2). When considering altering strategies for patients with a history of opioid abuse it is common for prescribers to think about non opioid alternatives. Cognitive behavioral therapy can be considered a non-opioid alternative as well as physical therapy. Referrals to addiction treatment programs are also preferred if the patient has a long history.
