Question

CELL AND MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

1. What causes rice plants to include starch and protein in their seeds?. What is the benefit to the rice plants from this practice?

2. Why are children who eat primarily rice and little of anything else at risk of being vitamin A deficient?

3. Proteins are produced as a result of the instructions provided by genes. Vitamin A and pro-vitamin A are not proteins. To make rice grains rich in pro-vitamin A, scientists would need to implant a certain gene or set of genes into the cells of the rice plant. What type of gene or set of genes would they need to insert?

(Hint: Some plant cells can produce pro-vitamin A from smaller molecules found in rice plants, which is why rice plants are a good source of pro-vitamin A.)
