Assessment 1 You are required to write your own case study on a patient with Type 2 Respiratory Failure. You can draw from clinical practicum experience and/or read widely on the topic and develop your own case study.
The word count allocated to each section is just an example of how you could divide it throughout the assessment.
The case study should include/In the description of the patient the following in Type 2 Respiratory Failure:
Section 1
The purpose of this section is to provide the reader with a detailed overview of the patient. You will need to read broadly on the topic to accurately present the case study information. Knowledge of physiology and related concepts in anatomy biology may assist in understanding the patient's condition.
Patient background (History prior to hospital admission) - What happened before hospital arrival. What may have contributed to admission?
Reason for admission - Signs and symptoms - Initial vital signs - Past medical/surgical history.
What might be applicable to the patient and why?
Please note that most of the information in the patient background, reason for admission and past medical/surgical history sections will come from you. As such, only provide references where you want to justify or support your point.
Aetiology and pathophysiology of Type 2 Respiratory Failure. These should be consistent with the information provided in the reason for admission and past medical/surgical history sections.
Physical examination of the patient and expected findings based on the condition using the A-E assessment format.
Only focus on areas that are related to the condition. Many medical surgical books or journal articles will provide areas to focus on when conducting a physical examination of a patient with a diagnosis of Type 2 Respiratory Failure. It is also important to include physical examination techniques (e.g. inspection, palpation, etc.) in your writing.
Diagnostic tests (e.g. blood test, CT etc.) are not part of the physical examination.

Students are then required to critique treatment for Type 2 Respiratory Failure and provide a critique in detail giving evidence-based rationale for the treatment, highlighting any nursing care that must be taken into consideration for the following treatment medication:
Salbutamol and ipratropium
Your critique should:
Provide an evidence-based rationale to justify the indication of this treatment for your patient.
Discuss the mechanism of action.
Discuss how the treatment impacts patient outcomes (recovery, hospital stay, mortality, morbidity etc.).
Explain the specific nursing care to be provided to this patient (the nursing care should be related to the critiqued treatment).
Be supported by evidence from journal articles and textbooks.

Include a brief outline of the following with relation to Type 2 Respiratory Failure.
What oxygen therapy is appropriate and why?
Why can too much oxygen be harmful?

Cover and contents page.
References no more than 7 years old.
Minimum of 8-10 references from journal articles and textbooks. The use of information and downloads from websites will not be accepted.
Strict APA 7th ed. Referencing style.
Length: 1200 words +/- 10%. The word count does not include references (in-text or end-text) and title page.
Formatting
Write your case study in an academic style using APA (7th ed.) headings and formal paragraphs.
1.5 line spacing throughout (including the reference list), and formal academic English writing in full sentences with correct spelling and grammar.
