Case Study: Dubai's AI Maktoum International Airport: The Largest in the making.
Description:
The world's largest and busiest airport is being built in Dubai, UAE. According to projections, Dubai's Al Maktoum International Airport, which already began operations after the completion of the first phase will be able to accommodate more than 200 million passengers per year. As of writing, Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport, USA is the busiest airport in the world, handling approximately 100 million passengers per year. A $ 35.7 billion (£ 29 billion) investment will be made in Dubai World Central (DWC), which will support the new Al Maktoum International Airport and other facilities in the south of Dubai. Once Dubai World Central, a 140 square kilometer multiphase development of six clustered zones, is fully developed, Dubai will be a leading integrated, multimodal transportation platform connecting air, sea, and land. The construction works started some years new Al Maktoum International Airport and other facilities in the south of Dubai. Once Dubai World Central, a 140 square kilometer multiphase development of six clustered zones, is fully developed,
Dubai will be a leading integrated, multimodal transportation platform connecting air, sea, and land. The construction works started some years ago and the passenger terminal was built in 2012. In the first phase, a large runway capable of supporting an A380 landing will be built. When it is completed, the airport will have a total of five parallel runways, 4.5 kilometers long, each separated by at least 800 metres. Currently, under construction, the ATC tower will be 91 meters tall when complete, which will make it the tallest freestanding ATC tower in the Middle East. As per the plan, there will be a number of terminals, a large area for cargo, and two main entrances. After completion, Dubai World Central will be able to accommodate more than 240 million passengers per annum with an annual cargo capacity of 16 million tonnes.
A fully automated baggage handling system capable of handling around 240 million bags yearly is another feature of the airport. Air- sea connectivity would be achievable in four hours. Also, the airport will have 100,000 car parking spaces and an express rail system will connect this airport with Dubai International Airport. This airport will also have hotels, shopping malls, support facilities, and high-end maintenance facilities which will make the airport a regional maintenance hub that can handle maintenance requirements of large aircraft, including the A380. The air connectivity, along with the connectivity of other modes of transport, will make Dubai and the UAE at large an important air transport hub in the world.
Read the case study carefully and answer the following questions:
1. Write down the prime features of the new airport project in Dubai.
